Posted by recep on March 26th, 2009

The worldwide population of older persons has grown remarkably during the 20th century. Between 1900 and 1990, the total population of the USA increased threefold, while the number of those > 65 yr old increased tenfold. Current and future population characteristics, as well as patterns of mortality, morbidity, disability, and use of health care services, provide a basis for understanding the enormous impact of aging on society. Worldwide demographic data are given in Ch. 106; this chapter focuses on the older population in the USA.
