HIP FRACTURE

Posted by recep on March 26th, 2009

An estimated 1.66 million hip fractures occurred worldwide in 1990—half of them in Europe and North America. While the numbers are projected to increase to 3.94 million by 2025 and to 6.26 million by 2050, the geographic distribution of hip fracture is also projected to change significantly. Up to 75% of hip fractures are expected to occur in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Russia (see FIG. 106-1), probably because of age structure, ethnic, dietary, and climate differences. These countries have fewer resources to deal with the problem. Major interventions such as improvements in nutrition, the widespread use of estrogen replacement therapy, or the development of other treatments are unlikely to be affordable or widely available in less developed regions. Therefore, preventive strategies will have to be applied according to the needs, resources, and cultures of different countries.
