LIFE EXPECTANCY
Posted by admin on November 16th, 2009The percentage of increased life expectancy at age 65 has surpassed the percentage of that measured from birth, partly because of fewer deaths from heart disease and stroke. For example, in Japan, life expec¬tancy at birth increased 12% between 1960 and 1980 (and in 1985 was the highest in the world at 77.1 yr); during the same period, the life expectancy at age 65 increased 26%, rising to 17.7 yr. Many other coun¬tries have seen similar gains in life expectancy, although adult life ex¬pectancy in some countries (mainly in Eastern Europe) has actually declined recently. However, much remains to be done to ensure that extra years are spent independently (see CLINICAL ISSUES, below).
