With the confrontational method of assessing the visual fields, the examiner and patient face each other and look at each other’s eyes. The examiner swings his outstretched arm in a circle and determines if the patient can detect a moving finger. This method may detect gross visual field defects, but in view of the clinical importance of such defects, a definitive determination should be done quantitatively by a person experienced in visual field examination.
